Project Manager - Muslim Heritage in Croydon Project

Job Description

Management of:       Volunteers, Freelance Staff & Project Workers

Salary:                       £18.85 per hour (1 Year Fixed Term Contract, 21 hours per week )

Location:                   Croydon



AYA develops and delivers ethnic-specific and culturally-sensitive projects and specialises in engaging hard to reach communities. We provide advice, skills, experiences, and support services to young people and adults to help advance their education, training and life skills in order to enable them to take full and active roles in their wider community.

The Project:

The Muslim Heritage in Croydon - the Tale of Croydon's Mosque project is an innovative  one year project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to research, document and promote the history and heritage of the Muslim community in Croydon, with particular emphasis on the earliest places of Muslim worship. The research will culminate in an online digital exhibition and a physical exhibition at the Croydon Clocktower. The exhibitions will include film-footage, photographs, oral histories, digitised material and an interactive 3D virtual model of Croydon Mosque.

The Person:

AYA is looking for a highly motivated dynamic self-starter with a solid track record of managing and delivering  community and heritage projects.

The potential candidate will have experience of working with the Muslim community on heritage based projects.

The potential candidate will have a desire and the knowledge of how to use the latest digital technologies to promote heritage over the Internet, including Web 2.0 technologies and multimedia applications.

The Role:

The Project Manager will have the overall responsibility for managing the Muslim Heritage in Croydon project and ensuring the project outcomes are delivered.

The post holder will work with our heritage partners (Museum of Croydon and Croydon Local Studies Library and Archive) and in particular, the Muslim community to research, document and promote the history of the earliest Muslim places of worship in Croydon.

The post holder will ensure that the project operates within AYA’s and HLF's policies and procedures.

 Key Responsibilities:

Provide effective leadership, coordination and management of the Muslim Heritage in Croydon - the Tale of Croydon's Mosque project;

Manage the delivery of all aspects of the project as detailed in the project plan

To be responsible for the recruitment and management of volunteers, freelance and ad hoc project workers.

To ensure that appropriate training and support is provided for all volunteers and participants.

To research, document and promote the history of Croydon's first Muslim places of worship.

To develop and deliver a website and exhibition to promote Croydon's Muslim Heritage.

To be responsible for the administration of the Project - expenses and payments, promotion/PR, project evaluation material, and any other administration required by AYA or our partners.

To be responsible for creating and maintaining a safe environment for all participants in particular young people and be the designated worker for safeguarding purposes for this project.

To be able to work flexibly as the project will involve some evening and weekend work.

Specific Responsibilities

·      setting up an advisory group of interested parties to help support and guide the project

·      procuring appropriate equipment required for the project

·      promoting the project locally and recruiting participants and volunteers

·      recruit and manage volunteers and freelance staff working on the project

·      ensure that appropriate training and support is provided for all volunteers

·      research the history of Croydon's first Muslim places of worship

·      provide the administration required for the Project

·      manage the delivery of all aspects of the project as detailed in project plan which will include:

·      disseminating oral history training to volunteers

·      film-making workshops for volunteers

·      photography workshop for volunteers

·      a digital 3D modelling workshop

·      recording and tagging of Oral Histories

·      filming and photographing of Croydon’s Muslim heritage sites.

·      collecting, scanning and digitising heritage material

·      creating a website for the project

·      editing film footage

·      producing a 3D digital model of Croydon Mosque

·      producing a heritage website

Skills Required:

Minimum Graduate level

Minimum of five years project management experience, including financial management and the ability to analyse, monitor and evaluate the success of a project

Knowledge of Urdu & Punjabi

Exceptional ICT knowledge, including practical experience of Web 2.0 technologies, website management and graphic applications. 

Experience in delivering heritage projects, including oral history recording, archive researching and interpretation

Experience of delivering faith sensitive projects

Excellent oral and written communication skills (English language)

Great interpersonal & communication skills - ability to effectively communicate with council and heritage officials, Muslim community leaders, young people, volunteers and the public

Highly organised, detail-oriented, with the ability to analyse information gathered from a variety of sources

Ability to take initiative, priorities demands and move work forward

Confident leading a team of volunteers and working independently to deadlines

Ability to work and manage individuals from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds

Ability to motivate young people

Experience of managing web based projects

Experience of film-making

Competent level of photography

Some knowledge of British Muslim heritage

Some knowledge of Croydon

Experience of the following software and applications:
